William L. “Bill” Willhide, 70, of Newville, died on the evening of Saturday, April 18, 2015, at his home.
He was born on October 12, 1944, in Shippensburg, a son of the late, Leo Willhide and Mary DeWalt Sheffler. Bill was a U.S. Army veteran enlisting on December 30, 1961 and honorably discharged on December 16, 1964. He married Ms. Kay E. Willis on July 11, 1970, at the Ridge Church of the Brethren, Shippensburg.
Bill was employed at the Mechanicsburg Naval Supply Depot, retiring as a Supervisor in 2000. He then went to work at the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle, for fourteen years, retiring in 2014.
He was a long-time member of Faith Chapel Independent Bible Church, Carlisle, where he also served as a Sunday School teacher and Elder. Bill was a member of N.A.R.F.E. He had dealings in real estate and rental properties over the years. In his free time he enjoyed hunting; taking trips with his wife to Florida and cruises to Hawaii, Alaska, Panama, and the Carribbean; and especially loved to spend lots of time with his three grandsons.
Bill is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kay; his son, Todd M. (Tammy) Willhide of Newville; his daughter, Trisha D. (Jeffrey) Scanlan of Shippensburg; three grandsons, Miles Willhide and Collin and Kyle Scanlan; step-father, Robert Sheffler of Waynesboro; four brothers, Charles (Linda) Willhide of Duncannon, Michael Willhide of Newark, DE, Gary (Shirley) Willhide of Kissimmee, FL, and Richard Schraeder of Waynesboro; four sisters, Patsy (Bruce) Rotz of Shippensburg, Mary (Roger) Schnee of Newark, DE, Kathy (Dave) Thomas of Kissimmee, FL, and Nancy (Ken) Peifer of Greencastle; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his biological parents, Bill was preceded in death by his step-mother, Betty Alexander Willhide; two brothers, Leo and John Willhide; and one sister in infancy.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, April 23, 2015, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastor Michael Mayer will officiate. Interment with military honors, conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday, at the funeral home.
