William Riester

August 29, 1918 — September 5, 2012

Surrounded by the presence and loving thoughts of the family he cared for deeply, William C. Riester, Sr., 94, left this world on September 5, 2012. A resident of Green Ridge Village in Newville, William died at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.

Born August 29, 1918 in North Bergen, New Jersey, he was the son of the late George J. and Esther Hall Riester.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Thomas C. Riester. One sister and three brothers are also deceased.

Formerly of Shippensburg, William is survived by Cyrilla E. Mihalik Riester, to whom he was married for 72 years. In addition to Cyrilla, he is survived by four children: Barbara A. Carney and her husband Michael of Saratoga Springs, NY, William C. Riester, Jr. and his wife Connie of Shippensburg, John H. Riester and his wife Sally of Cincinatti, OH, and Robin J. Riester and his wife Denise of Atlanta, GA; nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

A World War II veteran, William began his career in Theater Management. During World War II, he served as a Quartermaster for the U.S. Army while stationed in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. Upon return from the war, he continued his role as husband and father, eventually moving to the Shippensburg area to serve as the Director of the Budget for Shippensburg University. After retiring from the University, he devoted his life to family, neighbors, and hobbies. With a sharp mind and gifted eye for detail, he enjoyed home improvement and gardening, model train building, woodworking, and Big Band music.

He will be missed by his family, friends, and all those who cared for him.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg. The Rev. David A. Hillier will officiate. Burial will be private. There will be no viewing, however a visitation will be held one hour prior to services held at the funeral home.
