William Greenawalt

June 28, 1933 — February 24, 2024

William Paul “Bill” Greenawalt, 90, life-long resident of Newburg, departed this life on the morning of Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital.

He was born on June 28, 1933, in Newburg, the son of the late Paul H. and Nellie (Mitchell) Greenawalt. Bill was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War era. He married Rita M. Shriner on March 22, 1953 in Lewisburg, PA. She preceded him in death on October 23, 2010.

Bill farmed throughout his entire life, but also drove truck for a period of time for the former J. Shuman Co.; and was the night manager at the former Johnnie’s Restaurant and Service Station, in Newburg, for twenty-five years.

He was a member of the Orrstown Lodge F. & A.M. #262; Tall Cedars of Lebanon Valley Forest #145; and the Scottish Rite – Valley of Harrisburg, since 1961. Bill was also a member of the Hopewell United Methodist Church of McKinney; the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, Shippensburg; and a charter member of the Newburg-Hopewell Volunteer Fire Company #51. Bill had two main interests and hobbies throughout his life. The first one was music. He loved bluegrass and played the mandolin since he was a young boy. Bill was in several bands throughout his life, but most prominently, the Three Square Hollow Ridge Runners. The second one was clocks. In retirement, Bill loved to collect and repair antique clocks. At one point in time he was known to have several hundred in his possession. Bill also absolutely loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by four sons, Mark W. Greenawalt and wife Linda of Newburg, Clark E. Greenawalt and wife Kimberly of Newburg, Jeffrey L. Greenawalt of Chambersburg; and Garth M. Greenawalt and wife Lori of Newburg; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and his special friend, Louetta Varner of Amberson.

In addition to his parents and wife of fifty-seven years, Bill was preceded in death by a grandson, Christian T. Greenawalt.

His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastor Kevin Hughes will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in the Otterbein Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday afternoon at the funeral home.
