William Duncan

August 18, 1934 — June 6, 2016

William R. Duncan, Jr., 81 of Murrells Inlet, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, June 6, 2016 following a long life filled with love and service.

He was born on August 18, 1934, in Wilkinsburg, PA, the second child and oldest son of the late W. Rea Duncan, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Elliott. He graduated from Carlisle High School, Carlisle, PA in 1952. He enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed on Treasure island, San Francisco, Guam and the US Naval Communications Station in Washington DC. William is survived by his spouse, Wanda J. (Reichard) Duncan, whom he married on June 23, 1957.

After his discharge from the Navy, William continued to proudly serve his country as a civilian employed by the US Department of Defense until 1991. During that time, he held various positions including Production, Planning, and Control; Division Chief of the General Shops Division which overhauled the Army’s tanks and other equipment, and retired as a Supervisor, Supply Systems Analyst from the Systems Integration and Management Activity co-located at Letterkenny Army Depot.

After retirement he and his wife Wanda enjoyed sailing the Chesapeake Bay sharing many adventures with family and friends as they navigated around the Bay. After spending many winters in Myrtle Beach, SC, they moved to Woodlake Village, Murrells Inlet and have thoroughly enjoyed making new friends and exploring many of the community’s offerings, especially the beach.

William’s commitment to service extended into his community through volunteer service to the Combined Community Campaign, as an active member of the West End Fire and Rescue Company and the Cumberland Valley Hose Company where he served as an Emergency Medical Technician. He also served on community Planning Commissions and Home Owners Associations.

William was a member of the Shippensburg United Presbyterian Church, later transferring to the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church and most recently the First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach.

William was a kind and gentle man. He was reserved but enjoyed great conversations with others.

In addition to Wanda, his wife of almost 59 years, he is survived by a daughter, Marlene G. Stetson and her husband Jeff, of State College, PA, a grandson, of whom he was extremely proud, Dr. Jason R. Stetson of State College, PA; and a granddaughter Jessica L. who was born with special needs and held a very special place in her grandfather’s heart; two sisters, Elizabeth Fry of Waynesboro, PA, Lydia Gleezen of Lancaster, MA, a brother David Duncan, Carlisle, PA, and a sister-in-law Chloe, wife of his younger brother Robert L. Duncan who preceded him in death. Additionally, a son W. Rea Duncan III preceded him in death.

The family extends a heartfelt thanks to all of their relatives, friends, neighbors, the staff of the Inlet Medical Group, the Grand Strand Medical Center and the First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach for their help and support. William will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc, Shippensburg. The Rev. Kimberley D. Wadlington will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the West End Fire and Rescue Company, 49 Lurgan Avenue, Shippensburg, PA 17257 or Savannah’s Playground at www.savannahsplayground.org.
