William Chain

William B. Chain, Jr., 84, of Newburg, died Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Forest Park Health Center in Carlisle.

He was born Sunday, November 10, 1929, in Camden, NJ. He was a son of the late William B. Chain, Sr. and Sarah E. Garrison Chain.

Bill served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1953, retiring with the rank of Platoon Sgt. He received the Navy Cross and the Warrang Medal of the Republic of South Korea.

He was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church, Newburg.

He joined the Haddon Heights Fire Department in1956 and served in many capacities. He was elected Chief in 1970, serving until 1978 and was re-elected Chief in 1983. He was a past president of Camden County Fireman’s Association, Camden County Fire Chiefs, New Jersey State Volunteer Fireman’s Association, Camden County Hero Scholarship Fund, Camden County Firefighter Instructors, and Eastern Division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

He was a former President of the Board of Trustees of the First United Methodist Church and a past Director of the New Jersey State Fire College. Bill was also a member of the New Jersey State Fire Chiefs, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the International Association of Fire Instructors, the International Association of Arson Investigators and the Haddon Heights Business and Professional Association.

He served as Panel Chairman for the Camden County United Way and was a member of the Budget Committee of the Camden County United Way and a member of the Rising Sun Lodge, #15, Free and Accepted Masons in Haddonfield, NJ. He was a member of the Jubilee Quartet in NJ and the Newburg Area Men’s Chorus. Bill also was a member of the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post#223 and their “Minutemen” Honor Guard, Shippensburg.

Survivors include, his wife of 64 years, Virginia M. “Ginny” Ramsden Chain, one son, William Bridges Chain, III and his wife Jane Donne of Carlisle, one daughter, Sharon Hill Hubbard and her husband Mike of Willcox, AZ, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren and one brother, George Chain of Ephraim, NJ.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by three sisters.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 21, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. in the Otterbein United Methodist Church with The Rev. Dr. Cheryl A. Houser and the Rev. John A. Ile, Jr. officiating, followed by Military Honors conducted by the Shippensburg Veterans Council. A viewing will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the church with a Masonic service being held at 3:30 p.m. conducted by the Orrstown Lodge #262 F. &A.M.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, Haddon Heights, NJ, with the Rev. John A. Ile, Jr. and The Rev. William A. Benjamin officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson, NJ
