William C. “Bill” Porter, 98, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Friday, December 6, 2024, at Brookview at Menno Haven, Chambersburg.
He was born on April 1, 1926, in Shippensburg, a son of the late Franklin and Alice Snoke Porter.
Bill was a 1944 graduate of Shippensburg High School and member of the Memorial Lutheran Church, Shippensburg. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He married Miriam L. Crouse on June 23, 1945. She preceded him in death on April 11, 2015.
Bill worked as a supervisor in the shipping department at the Beistle Company, retiring in 1988. Prior to the Beistle Company, Bill worked in the grocery industry for 17 years at the former Economy Store and Carothers’, both in Shippensburg. He was known for his charismatic and kindhearted personality. Many knew Bill at the Beistle Company, not only as a supervisor, but someone who would jump in and help on the line when needed. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and ballroom dancing. Bill was also well known within the community as playing Santa Claus during the Christmas season.
He is survived by three children, D. Stephan (Toni) Porter of Enola, Kristine McFeely Nichols of Shippensburg, and Kimberly V. Porter of New Oxford; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Porter of Chambersburg; ten grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by his son, Gary F. Porter; and seven siblings, Henry, Catherine, Dana, Elsie, Robert, Ray, and Dot Porter.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. with Pastor Mike Allwein officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery with military honors. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
