V. Helen Kent
November 10, 1924 — March 3, 2018
Having kept the faith, V. Helen Kent completed her course of life, passed from death unto life, entered into the presence of the Lord and reunited with her husband on the evening of March 3, 2018.
Frank A. and Ruth Shuman Heberlig welcomed Helen into this world on a farm near Newburg November 10, 1924. She was later joined by Frank S., Joanna [Rupert] and William G. who is now deceased.
After graduating from Shippensburg High School, she trained and received her R.N. degree at Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. She continued to work at Harrisburg Hospital until she married James W. Kent April 10, 1948. That union lasted 6 weeks shy of 60 years at his death February 23, 2008.
Together they raised their family W. David, John and Janice [Allen.] She loved her daughters-in-law Susan, Linda and Carolyn D. Kent and son-in-law Steve Allen as her own. She was blessed with 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 2 foster great grandchildren. She also found room in her heart for 2 step grand daughters and 6 step great grandchildren.
Helen’s professional life included Shippensburg Community Nurse in the 1950’s, Chambersburg Hospital 5th floor nurse in the 1960’s, and 23 years as the school nurse at Shippensburg Senior High School and Nancy Grayson Elementary School retiring in 1989.
She became a lay chaplain at Chambersburg Hospital in her 80’s and participated with the Abiders at Penn Hall sitting with patients who were dying and their families. She also organized and facilitated the Grandmothers Club at Penn Hall, a support group for elderly, widowed and lonely women.
Never wanting to be idle, she continued to assist with family canning in the summer, boiling apple butter in the fall and butchering in the winter into her 90’s. She helped her great grandchildren plant potatoes on Good Friday at age 92.
Helen was a long time member of the Newburg United Methodist Church [formerly United Brethren]. Later she was a member of the First Church of God in Shippensburg and more recently a member of West Side Brethren in Christ Chambersburg.
An avid Bible reader and student, she taught Sunday School most of her life.
She taught her family the Christian faith and the Christian virtues including how to love your neighbor when they are unloving, showing kindness to those who hurt you, giving to the less fortunate, showing compassion to those who are suffering, encouraging those who are downtrodden, strengthening those who are weak and comforting those who are grieving. Many have been blessed by her visits and prayers, home baked pies, cookies and jellies or a home cooked meal at her abundant table. She and Jim welcomed all into their home.
Helen exhibited a sweet, quiet and gentle spirit, never drawing attention to herself but rather receiving contentment from the satisfaction of knowing that she had influenced people to achieve great success.
Helen’s last written instructions were to “have a party. You can miss me, but don’t mourn as I will be waiting for you and cheering you on. What a grand reunion that will be.” Cheering you on is a reference to Hebrews 12:1,2 which states “Therefore since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every sin and weight which does so easily beset us, and run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.” Helen has now joined that great cloud of witnesses who is watching and cheering us on as we run the race of life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the Benevolence Fund of Menno Haven, 1425 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg PA 17201.
Family will receive friends and acquaintances in the chapel at Penn Hall 1425 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg PA 17201 Tuesday evening March 6, 2018 from 6-8 pm and one hour prior to memorial services which are scheduled at 2 pm Wednesday March 7, 2018 at West Side Brethren in Christ Church 2265 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, Pa 17202.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
