Upton Funk

September 17, 1939 — April 4, 2015

Upton K. Funk, 75, of Shippensburg, died on Saturday, April 4, 2015, at his home in Winter Haven, FL.

He was born on September 17, 1939, in Chambersburg, the son of the late Upton L. and Beulah Kendig Funk. Upton married Ms. Doris Pugh on March 3, 1962 at the Memorial Lutheran Church, Shippensburg. He was then inducted into the U.S. Army on May 13, 1963, honorably discharged on May 12, 1965, and transferred to the Army Reserves until May 12, 1969.

Upton retired from the Pennsylvania State Liquor Control Board in 1996. He was the long-time manager of Shippensburg’s local State Store.

He was a member of the Cumberland Valley Lodge #315 F. & A.M., the Valley Forest #145 Tall Cedars of Lebanon, the Shippensburg Scottish Rite Club, and the Harrisburg Consistory. Upton was a life member of the Hub City Club, a member of the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, and the Durff-Kuhn V.F.W. Post #6168, all of Shippensburg, where he was extremely involved with its Military Honors Marching Unit. He liked to golf and took great enjoyment in his retirement in Florida.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris; two sons, Brian Funk of Newburg and Charles (Tonya) Funk of Shippensburg; and two grandchildren, Cassidy and Carter Funk, both of Shippensburg. In addition to his parents, Upton was preceded in death by his sister.

His graveside funeral, with a Masonic service and military honors, will be held in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg, at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, April 16, 2015. The Rev. George W. Heckard will officiate. Following the interment, there will be a Fellowship of Remembrance at the Cumberland Valley Masonic Lodge #315 at 41 Stewart Place, Shippensburg, to celebrate Upton’s life. Anyone who wishes to attend either of the two events is more than welcome. The Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., has been entrusted with his local funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to either the Durff-Kuhn V.F.W. Post #6168 Marching Unit at 130 West King St. Shippensburg, PA 17257 or the Grace United Church of Christ at 121 East Orange Street Shippensburg, PA 17257.
