Susan Ernst

Susan J. (Frey) Ernst, 79, of Shippensburg, passed away the evening of Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at the Mercy House of Chambersburg.

She was born on Monday, April 10, 1944 in Hagerstown, MD, a daughter of the late R. Kenneth and Verna Ruth (Keller) Frey.

Susan was a 1962 graduate of the Smithsburg High School and member of the Grace United Church of Christ, Shippensburg. She loved to volunteer in the community and dedicated over 35 years of service at the Shippensburg Community Fair. She also enjoyed volunteering at the former Rowland Lab on the campus of Shippensburg University and cherished all the lasting friendships with students she made along the way. Susan was a dedicated wife to her husband, Richard, and worked alongside him as secretary of Ernst Business Services. Above all else in life, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Nicole J. Ernst and her companion Darrell of Shippensburg and Roxanne L. Myers and her husband Jonathan of Newburg; one son, W. Douglas Diehl, Jr. and his companion Liz of Smithsburg, MD; four grandchildren, Shelby Diehl, Samantha Diehl, Abby Myers, and Anna Myers; two sisters, Sandra Dunnington and her husband Ken of Gettysburg and Carol Rinehart and her husband Ron of Ephrata; two nieces; and two great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Ernst, who passed away on April 9, 2012.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace United Church of Christ with The Rev. George W. Heckard officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. A viewing will be held Monday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.
