Sarah Hubert

November 13, 1923 — April 6, 2014

Sarah A. Hubert, 90, a resident of the Episcopal Home, Shippensburg, formerly of York, died Sunday April 6, 2014. She was born November 13, 1923 in Calhoun, Georgia. Sarah was the daughter of the late James L. and Annie Belle Bridges Henson. She was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Hubert, who died July 20, 1986. Her two brothers, James and Bud and one sister, Helen, are also deceased.

After graduating in 1941 from Chattanooga Central High School in Tennessee, Sarah went to work for a local telephone company. She then matriculated to Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, earning a health and physical education degree in 1949. After moving to Pennsylvania to accept a position at the York YWCA, Sarah taught swimming and helped to coordinate the YWCA's various programs. Also during her time at the Y, Sarah was the camp director at Camp Cann-Edi-On just north of York. She later went on to receive her library science degree from Millersville University, eventually earning a job with the Pennsylvania State Department of Education, Division of Library Science. Sarah moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina after her husband's death and became a member of 1st Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach and regularly joined the ladies bible study. She enjoyed reading, baking and walking on the beach. She spent many hours volunteering at Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.

Sarah returned to Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, in 2009 to be with her family. She became a member of Grace United Church of Christ as well as the Shippensburg Civic Club. She was also an avid supporter of the Shippensburg Public Library. Sarah is survived by her son, John S. Hubert, Jr. her daughter-in-law Barbara, and one grandson, Cadet 4th Class Kyle H. Hubert, U.S. Air Force Academy, all of Shippensburg.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 12, 2014 in the Grace United Church of Christ, Shippensburg at 11am. Officiating will be The Rev. George W. Heckard. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the services in church. A private burial will take place at the Prospect Hill Cemetery in York.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Church of Christ, 121 East Orange Street, Shippensburg, PA 17257 or the Episcopal Home, 206 East Burd Street, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
