Sara Bert Pugh, 89, of Orrstown, died Monday, January 5, 2015, at Menno Haven, Chambersburg.
She was born March 4, 1925, in Roxbury. Sara was the daughter of the late Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rosenberry Bert and Jesse H. Bert of Lurgan. She was the wife of the late Andrew R. Pugh of Orrstown. They were married December 11, 1945.
Sara is survived by three daughters, Andrea L. Pugh of Orrstown, Patricia K. Pugh of St. Thomas, and Jean P. Shipman and husband Mark J. of Salt Lake City, UT; three granddaughters, Jennifer Kistler Uhlenberg, of Greensboro, NC, Robbyn Kistler of Brooklyn, NY, and Dr. Heidi Kile Kistler of Lancaster, and their spouses; and 6 great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, preceded in death by two brothers, John and George Bert, and her close sister Ida Bert Davis.
Sara was a 1941 graduate of the Chambersburg High School. She worked for 25 years as a library assistant for the Shippensburg University Ezra Lehman Library. She previously worked for 29 years as a teller for the Orrstown Bank; she was their first female employee.
Sara attended the St. Paul’s Orrstown Lutheran Church, Orrstown, where she taught elementary age Sunday School for several years. She sang in the church choir, as did her husband. She also was pianist for the Orrstown Male Chorus. Her hobbies included her immediate and extended family, caring for her family’s farm and her special needs daughter, playing the piano, knitting and other assorted needle work. She also served as Secretary/Treasurer for the Orrstown Borough for many years. She was a bookkeeper for her and her husband’s many entrepreneurial businesses including the farm and other services such as a school bus contract, milk hauling and coal and fertilizer delivery.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015, in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Orrstown, at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Charles Millikan and Pastor Christine Kirchner. Interment in the Spring Hill Cemetery will be private. A viewing will be held on Friday, January 9, 2015 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. There will be no viewing or visitation the day of the service.
