Samuel L. Swanger, 78, of Newburg, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 in the Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Saturday, June 25, 1938 in Mongul, Franklin County, he was a son of the late Gerald R. “Chuck” and Dorothy M. Gruver Swanger.
Sam was a 1956 graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School. He was a Pennsylvania State Employee for 37 years as a surveyor and then a Superintendent of the Franklin County Highways. He briefly worked for Bill Arrowood as a surveyor and inspector. He was a Lurgan Township Supervisor for 12 years until he retired at the age of 70.Sam was a hard worker all of his life and when asked if he was enjoying retirement, he responded he hated it.
He was a member of the Lurgan Township Lions Club for many years. He was also a member of the Coldspring Sportsman’s Association, P.A.R.S.E., Orrstown Sportsman’s Club, and the Sons of American Legion, Dry Run.
Sam was a man’s man with a very keen mind. There’s nothing he couldn’t figure out or fix. He loved hunting, fishing, pitching horse shoes and in his younger days, racing cars, playing football and baseball.
Sam always had a dog by his side and sometimes two. He loved and respected nature and enjoyed riding his four wheeler through his woods and on his mountain ground.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Z. Darlene Umbrell Swanger, two daughters; Stacy M. (husband Kevin) Franzoni, Newburg, and Ginger L. (husband Chuck) Kane, Fayetteville, four grandsons; David, Brian, Michael Burkholder and Austin Franzoni; three great grandchildren, Mya, Wyatt and Addison Burkholder, and one sister, Mary (husband Glenn) Wadel.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Swanger.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium with The Rev. Marlin A. “Butch” Neil officiating. Burial will be in Otterbein Cemetery. A viewing will be held Tuesday, from 6-8 and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
