Samuel I. Martin, 89, a resident of Elmcroft of Shippensburg, formerly of Walnut Bottom, died Friday, January 7, 2011 in the home.
Born June 19, 1921 in Shippensburg, he was a son of the late Charles H. and Mary J. Gettle Martin.
He retired after 31 years of service from the Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg and was a 1937 graduate of the Shippensburg High School. Samuel was a member of the American Legion Post # 232 in Spring Run, and a past trustee of the South Newton Township Volunteer Fire Company in Walnut Bottom. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II serving as Staff Sergeant with Company C 318th Infantry and received the Purple Heart after being wounded in Northern France.
Surviving is one son, Samuel R. Martin and his wife Linda of Shippensburg, three daughters; Mary I. Hare and her husband Charles, and Norma Jean Keefer and her husband Glenn all of Shippensburg, and Melissa K. Burch and her husband Kenneth of Kansas City, MO, one son in law, Edgar Peiper of Shippensburg, one brother, Arthur Martin of Shippensburg, nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nora Davidson Martin, second wife, Shirley Peterson Martin, one daughter, Susan Peiper, one son, William L. Martin, four brothers; Bruce, Charles, John, and Robert Martin.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2011 in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc., Shippensburg at 2:00 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor Tim Wheeler. Burial with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg VFW and American Legion Posts will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held Wednesday afternoon one hour prior to the services in the funeral home.
