Samuel A. Bender, 95, departed this life during the late evening hours of Monday, November 9, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born on June 27, 1920, in Lurgan, a son of the late David H. and Florence I. Kauffman Bender. Samuel was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II, inducted on April 16, 1942 and honorably discharged on November 24, 1945. Shortly thereafter he married Ms. Pauline Rebok on December 17, 1946 at the Newburg United Methodist Church.
Samuel worked as a Heavy Mobile Mechanic at the Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring on March 28, 1979, after thirty-five years of employment and he also drove school bus for Lee McBeth & Sons for about seven years after his retirement.
He was a long-time member of the Newburg United Methodist Church; a life member of the Newburg Hopewell Volunteer Fire Company #51 and Fire Police; a member of the Newburg IOOF Lodge #562; and the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, Shippensburg. In his free time, Samuel enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, camping, and pitching horseshoes. He also liked to bowl, play cards, and travel.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Pauline; five children, Paul A. (Debra) Bender of Newburg, Philip I. Bender of Orrstown, Richard L. (Jane) Bender of Newburg, Samuel J. Bender of Shippensburg, and Ruth A. (Edgar) Hoover of Newburg; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; two brothers, David A. (Rose) Bender and Harold M. ‘Milt” Bender both of Newburg; sisters-in-law, Marie Bender of Chambersburg and Julia Bender of Shippensburg; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Samuel was preceded in death by one daughter, Connie L. Ross, who died in 1998; and five brothers, Earl, Crawford, and Wayne Bender, and two in infancy.
His funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at the Newburg United Methodist Church. Rev. Steve P. Salisbury will officiate. Interment, with military honors provided by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in the Pleasant Hall Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg.
