Robert Taylor

Robert D. Taylor, Sr. 91, of Shippensburg, passed away surrounded by his family on October 29, 2014 at Providence Place, Chambersburg, PA where he had resided for close to three years.

He was born on October 12, 1923, in Jackson, MI, the son of the late George Dewey and Gladys Leigh Taylor.

After graduating from Vandercook Lake High School in 1941, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp on November 6, 1942. He served as a radio operator flying missions in the China, Burma, India Theater of World War II.

Using the G.I. Bill, he attended Jackson Community College and then earned a B.S. in Education at Western Michigan University. He completed his Master’s in Education at the University of Michigan and his PhD at Michigan State University.

In 1968, he was hired by Shippensburg University to be Director of the Student Teaching Program. The following year, in addition to that responsibility, he became the Associate Dean of the College of Education and Human Services. He retired from S.U. in 1986.

He was a member of the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church where he served a term as a Ruling Elder. While he was Associate Dean, he belonged to Phi Delta Kappa, and several County Schoolmen’s Associations. He was a life member of the Durff-Kuhn V.F.W. #6168 and the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Jane Colegrove Taylor; two daughters Pam Heinz of Carpinteria, CA and Kathryn (Doug) Wilburne of Shippensburg; two sons Robert (Kathy) Taylor, Jr. of Houghton Lake, MI and Patrick (Kim) Taylor of Shippensburg; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a cousin Elna (Bill) Gerth of Highland, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Thursday, October 30, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in the Middle Spring Cemetery with military honors to be conducted by the Shippensburg Veterans Council, Friday, October 31, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. A visitation will take place in the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church until the start of funeral services at 3:00 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Derek Wadlington.
