Robert S. Rose, (Col., USA, Ret.), 80 of Shippensburg, died Sunday, December 30, 2012 at home.
Born December 22, 1932 in Mt. Holly, NJ, he was a son of the late Charles A. and Emma V. Dougherty Rose.
Bob served in the United States Army for 32 years, first enlisting in the Army in 1953. He served a variety of Infantry assignments from Squad Leader to Brigade Commander and Post Commander, and completed two tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired in 1986 as the Commander of the Presidio in San Francisco, CA. In 1987, Bob and his wife Jan settled in Shippensburg, where he worked as a self-employed Development and Fundraising consultant and served as Interim Director of Development for the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. In 1996 he was recruited to be the Capital Campaign Coordinator at Wilson College, Chambersburg. He retired from Wilson College in 2001 as the Vice President for College Advancement after directing a highly successful capital campaign.
Bob grew up in Philadelphia, and graduated there from Central High School. He initially attended Penn State University. After his Army enlistment, he graduated in 1958 as a Distinguished Military Graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and was commissioned as an officer in the Regular Army. He received his Masters of Public Administration in 1971 from the University of Oklahoma and was a 1977 graduate of the US Army War College, Carlisle.
He was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, serving as a Vestryman, Junior Warden, chair or co-chair of various committees, and served on three different successful fund-raising campaigns. At the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania he served as co-chair of the Diocesan Planned Giving Committee. He was a former member of the Ecclesiastical Trail Court and served on the Board of St Barnabas Center for Ministry.
While living in Shippensburg, he was chair of the Borough Civil Service Commission and was a commissioner of the former Mid-Cumberland Valley Regional Police Commission. He was president of the Shippensburg Meals on Wheels, and a member of the Historical Society.
Bob also was a member of the Cumberland County Republican Committee and its Governor’s Club, the Military Officers Association of America, Durff-Kuhn VFW Post # 6168, Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, Mt. Pisgah Lodge # 443 F. & A.M., Harrisburg Consistory, and the Zembo Shrine .
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janet Huber Rose, four children; Nancy Rose and her husband James Poterba, Belmont, MA; Marjorie Rose and her husband Douglas Irwin, Hanover, NH; Ellen Rose, Shippensburg; and Robert Huber Rose and his wife Maggie, Spotsylvania, VA; one brother, Wilbur V. Rose, Ocala, FL; and eight grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a son, John David Rose, a grandson, Christian Jessen, a sister, Virginia R. Pursell, and brother, Charles Rose.
A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2013 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. The celebrant will be the Right Reverend Nathan Baxter, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania. Officiating will be the Reverend Barbara Hutchison, and the Reverend Canon William Murphey. Private burial with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg VFW and American Legion Posts will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Lemasters, PA. There will be no viewing however a visitation will be in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc. Shippensburg, on Thursday evening, January 3, from 8-9 p.m., where a Masonic Service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. by Mt. Pisgah Lodge # 443 F. & A.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 206 E. Burd St., Shippensburg, PA 17257.
