Robert C. McLaughlin, 88, of Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014 in the Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Monday, December 14, 1925 in Lees Cross Roads, Cumberland County, he was a son of the late James M. and Elizabeth Shields McLaughlin.
Robert worked as an electrician at the United States Army War College, Carlisle, was a member of the Messiah United Methodist Church, Shippensburg where he was very active in various committees. He was a United States Army Air Corps Veteran serving in WWII where he received the Purple Heart after being wounded during his 19th mission. He was a member of the Cumberland Valley Hose Company, Shippensburg.
He loved watching sports and listening to older country music, was a very talented handyman who could build anything including his own house. Robert loved and cherished his children and grandchildren.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara J. (husband James) Higginbotham, of Blairs Mills, and Christine M. (husband Wayne) Heberlig of Mt. Wolf, three sons, Robert Lee (wife Joan) McLaughlin of Wildwood Crest, NJ, G. Jeffrey (wife Frances) McLaughlin of York and Brian Matthews (wife Pamela) McLaughlin of Shippensburg, 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife D. Jean Matthews McLaughlin who died June 18, 2014, six brothers, Charles, Gerald, Paul, Kenneth, Donald and William McLaughlin and two sisters, Isabelle Scarborough and Nellie McLaughlin.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 10, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. in the Messiah United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne Heberlig officiating. Burial will be private in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens with Military Honors conducted by the Cumberland County Honor Guard.
