Richard Evelyn Thomas, 79, of Shippensburg passed away in his home with the support of Hospice on Sunday, March 16, 2014 surrounded by his family and the devotional love they shared with him.

He was born February 21, 1935 in Shippensburg, Cumberland County. Dick was a son of the late Jerry and Violet Fitzgerald Thomas and his step mother Marie Kohr Thomas.

Richard (Dick) retired from Shippensburg University after 29 years of employment and was a devoted member of the campus family. Prior to then, he worked for Hippensteel’s Garage and the William Barbour Funeral Home. Richard served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. In the community he was a life member of the Vigilant Hose Company, and served on the Shippensburg Community Fair Board for many years.

Dick was a loving family man. He taught his children and grandchildren the love and need of family, and respect by involving them in his own passions and life experiences. His understanding of love and life will be carried on through each of them.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers John, James, and Jacob Thomas, and two sisters Geraldine Sears and Mildred Ruth.

Richard is survived by his loving wife Jean of nearly 60 years, son Richard (wife Sharon) Thomas, Jr., and daughters Kathy (husband Gregory) Coy, and Connie Thomas. He has five grandchildren and five great grandchildren: Claudia (husband Jeff) Garner with son Caden, Michelle (husband Jason) McConnell with daughter Carly, Bryan (wife Jocelyn) Coy with daughters Peyton and Addyson, Timothy (wife Katey) Coy with son Tegan and Heidi Coy. Dick is also survived by a brother Jerry Thomas, Jr. and two sisters Martha Jones, and Mary Swidler, a step sister Betty Jane Wyrick, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 20, 2014 in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg at 1 p.m. Officiating will be The Rev. Paul Hauk. Burial with military services conducted by the Shippensburg American Legion and VFW posts will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services in the funeral home.
