Richard D. Smith, 64, of Newburg, died Saturday, December 4, 2010 in the M.S. Hershey Medical Center.
Born December 22, 1945 in Upper Mifflin township, Cumberland County; he was a son of the late Herman D. and Lucy C. Negley Smith.
He retired from the New Cumberland Army Depot. He was a 1964 Graduate of Big Spring High School. Richard was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, Newburg, Big Spring Lodge # 361 F & A.M., Valley Forest # 145 Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Harrisburg Consistory, National Rifle Assoc., Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post # 223, Shippensburg, Sinnemahoning Sportsmen’s Assoc., Shippensburg Fish & Game Assoc., North American Hunting Club, Stumble In, Sinnemahoning, a life member of both the Newville VFW Post # 6070 and the Veterans of the Vietnam War.
He was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with four bronze stars. Richard was an avid hunter, enjoyed the outdoors, a NASCAR fan, Penn State football fan and was a craftsman of woodworking. His beloved pet dog “Tony” was always by his side.
He is survived by his wife Darlene “Jackie” Bolen Smith, one brother Robert W. Smith and his wife Joyce of Gardners, four sisters; Catherine E. Hill of New Castle, DE, Shirley Boyd and her husband Wally, and Patsy Souders all of Newville, and Arlene Eberly and her husband Richard of Newburg.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 9, 2010 in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc., 112 West King Street Shippensburg at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Mary Jane King officiating. Burial with military honors conducted by the Cumberland County Veteran’s Council will be in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home with Masonic services conducted at 7:30 p.m.
