Richard L. Reed, 89, a resident of Elmcroft of Shippensburg, died on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 3, 2014.
He was born on August 13, 1925, in Shippensburg, a son of the late Gordon and Mary Hippensteel Reed. Richard was a U.S. Navy Veteran of W.W. II, enlisting on November 9, 1943 and honorably discharged on May 3, 1946. He also enlisted in the Pennsylvania National Guard/Army Reserve, three separate times, beginning in October of 1950 thru January of 1969.
Richard worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator, driving an Ammunition Bus, at the Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, retiring in 1985. He was a post member of both the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223 and the Durff-Kuhn V.F.W. Post #6168, and a member of the Minnequa Social Club, all of Shippensburg. Richard was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed spending time at the Boone Run Sportsman Club and he also liked to watch NASCAR.
He is survived by his three sons, Richard L. Reed, Jr. of NC, Thomas G. Reed of Mechanicsburg, and Douglas K. Reed of York; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one brother, John Reed of Shippensburg; two step-daughters; four step-sons; sixteen step-grandchildren; twenty three step-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his first wife Hazel McMullen; his second wife, Anna G. Hampton Shoop Reed; and two brothers, Gordon and Donald Reed.
His funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, December 8, 2014, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastor Marlin C. Fleck will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be Sunday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
