Richard Knoll

Richard S. Knoll, Sr., 89, of Newburg, PA, died on the morning of March 12, 2014, at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center. He and his wife moved to Newburg from Massachusets in 1987.

He was born on September 9, 1924, in Newton, NJ, the son of the late George and Ethel Stevens Knoll. Richard was a veteran of W.W. II, serving in the Marine Corps, enlisting in 1943 and honorably discharged in 1945. Richard was a Seagoing Marine and consequently a Plank Owner of his ship, the U.S.S. New Jersey BB-62. He was a life-member of both the American Legion Post #86, Newton, NJ and the Landis McLeaf Marine Corps League, Chambersburg.

Richard worked for Agway Inc. for seventeen years, retiring from the Building Department in 1986. He served as Chief of the Sparta Township Fire Dept., in 1960, was a 63 year Master Mason of the Harmony Lodge # 8 F. & A.M., Newton, NJ, and was also a member of the Scottish Rite. In his free time, Richard liked to spend time at the Shippensburg Public Library and enjoyed reading novels of the historical, military, and action/intrigue, genres.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Virginia L. Noel Knoll, whom he married on March 11, 1967, at the Andover Presbyterian Church, Andover, NJ; his son, Richard S. (Lourdes) Knoll, Jr., of Port Orange, FL; his daughter, Kimberly A. (Hosea) Richards of Oak Hill, FL; one grandson, Joseph R. (Kristine) Knoll of Los Angeles, CA; one great granddaughter who is soon on the way; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanne Rude.

His memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. Mr. Christian Esh will officiate. A Masonic service will take place at 1:45 p.m., and military honors, conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow the preceding services.
