Richard Holtry

Richard S. Holtry, 87, Shippensburg, PA, died on August 7, 2013 at 8:50 a.m. Born on July 25, 1926 in Shippensburg, he was one of five sons of the late Walter S. and Helen L. Hawk Holtry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Walter Eugene (died at birth), Robert E. and Glenn O.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Doreen E. (Wadel) Holtry; his daughter Barbara J. Fisher (John); grandchildren Christopher L. Fisher (Sue) and Teresa R. Fisher Black (Robert); and great-grandchildren Shea Lynn Fisher, Kierstin M. and Ian M. Black. He is also survived by two brothers: Clyde E. and Ray E. Holtry both of Shippensburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was a federal employee having worked at Letterkenny Army Depot for a period of 42 years. He retired from an Administrative Supervisory position in July 1987. He was the recipient of many awards during his career.

He was a veteran of World War II having served 22 months in the U.S. Army Air Corps having enlisted in the Corps program while a junior in high school. He served at several state side military bases.

He attended a one-room country school for the first eight grades before attending and graduating from Shippensburg Area Senior High School in 1944. He attended several career development training classes/courses in his adult life.

He was a 65-year member of Messiah United Methodist Church and served on the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee as Secretary for 20 years and served as Lay Delegate for 25 years to the Central Pennsylvania Annual Conference (now the Susquehanna Conference). He was also President of the Men’s Bible Class during the 1970s and the attendance of the class exceeded 100 members every Sunday morning. He joined the Cumberland Valley Hose Company in 1948 and was elected Secretary in 1951, a post he held for 54 years. He served as Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Hose Company and also as Secretary of the EMS Board when EMS became a separate entity from the Hose Company – a period of six years. In addition, he volunteered as an ambulance driver for both the Hose Company and EMS. He was Secretary of the Shippensburg Firefighters Activities Center Building Committee, a member of the National Defense Industrial Association, Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firefighters Association, and the Cumberland County Volunteer Firefighters Association.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc. with the Rev. Steven M. Livermore and the Rev. Dr. Francis H. Norton officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
