Richard Ray Hockersmith, 81 of Springfield Road, Shippensburg, died Monday, July 9, 2012 in the Shippensburg Health Care Center.
Born Sunday, April 19, 1931 in Shippensburg, he was a son of the late J. Perry and Grace W. Watson Hockersmith.
Richard was a 1949 graduate of the Shippensburg Area Senior High School and then was drafted by the United States Army where he served in the Korean Conflict. He retired in 1993 from Letterkenny Army Depot after 31 years of service.
He was a member of the Messiah United Methodist Church, Durff-Kuhn VFW Post # 6168 and Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post # 223 all in Shippensburg and was a past member of the Shippensburg Fish and Game Club. Richard loved woodworking and enjoyed traveling and maintaining his yard and property. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved and cherished his family.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, M. Grace Everts Hockersmith, two sons, Richard Ray Hockersmith Jr., and his wife Vickie of Plattsburgh, NY and Eric Eugene Hockersmith and his wife Kathryn of Waitsburg, WA, three grandsons, Daniel R. Hockersmith of Plattsburgh, NY, Jeremy J. Bobber of Reno, NV and John D. Hockersmith of Waitsburg, WA, one granddaughter, Jaclyn R. Hockersmith of Manhattan, NY, one sister, Ruth L. Mowery of Carlisle and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Robert Hockersmith and two sisters, Catherine E. Leach and Alda G.Getsko.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 16, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc. with Pastor Dianne Salter officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Veterans Council. Viewings will be held Sunday, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Monday in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society Franklin and Fulton Unit, 384 Floral Avenue, Chambersburg, Pa 17201.
