Richard L. “Dick” Hershey, 75, of Chambersburg, passed away the morning of Thursday, March 9, 2023 at his home with his loving family by his side.
He was born on January 28, 1948 in Carlisle, a son of the late Merle W. and Josephine A. (Holtry) Hershey. He married Donna K. (Sprenkle) Hershey on July 15, 1988.
Dick retired from Letterkenny Army Depot in 2004. Following retirement, he worked for several landscapers including, Dan Steenstra Landscaping, Fisher’s Lawn Service, and A+ Lawn Care of Chambersburg. Dick also was employed as a groundskeeper for Conocodell Golf Club, Penske Trucking, and Rutter’s.
He was very active locally in fire service, spending countless hours volunteering for Pleasant Hall Fire Company, West End Fire & Rescue, Franklin Fire Company, Marion Volunteer Fire Company, and Carlisle Fire & Rescue Services. Often times, he would be seen cooking for chicken BBQs, serving ice cream at the Shippensburg Fair, cooking for firehouse banquets, and volunteering at BINGO events. Dick actively participated in the Jr. Fire Academy, was a member of the Durff-Kuhn VFW Post #6168 and was a United States Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War Era. He was a Forest Fire Warden for 21 years, driver and EMT for Medic One, past chairman of the Cumberland County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association.
Dick enjoyed watching NASCAR and rooting for Dale Earnhardt. He was an avid Washington Redskins and Green Bay Packers fan, who enjoyed hunting and watching Westerns, especially John Wayne, in his free time. Dick enjoyed playing and coaching softball and in his later years took an interest in golfing. He loved dog sitting Remington and Oakley and loved his fur babies, Fraser and Jamie.
He is survived by his wife, Donna K. (Sprenkle) Hershey; three children, Melissa (Ben) Wetzel, Keith (Amy) Hershey, and Cassandra (Jerry) Houpt; one stepson, Paul (Kim) Smith; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and seven siblings, William (Judy) Hershey, Gerald (Phyllis) Hershey, Edgar Hershey, Thomas Hershey, Geraldine (Robert) Shipp, Linda (Norman) Hockenberry, and Peggy Clouse.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six siblings, Doris Markelwitz, A. Ruth Gutshall, Mildred Hockenberry, Betty Hershey, and one set of twins.
Funeral services, with firefighter honors, will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg with Pastor Bruce Levy officiating. Burial will follow in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens, with military honors conducted by the Minutemen of the American Legion Post #223. A viewing will be held Monday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
