Richard M. Gardner, 75, of Newburg, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at his home.
Born Saturday, June 17, 1939 in Newburg, he was a son of the late Bryce Samuel and Edna Beatrice Heberlig Gardner.
Richard was a 1957 graduate of the Shippensburg Area Senior High School, and a member of the Greyhound football and baseball teams, he also played on various fast and slow pitch baseball and softball leagues. Richard was a member of the FFA.
After high school he married Mary Grace Clapsadle on October 24, 1959 and together they began farming on his father’s farm and eventually purchased their own farm on Enola Road, Newburg which they farmed until 1989.
Richard was a member of the Newburg United Methodist Church. He worked at the Carlisle Court House and later went to work at the Shippensburg Area Senior High School in the Maintenance Department for a number of years. He later spent the rest of his time making local and long distance driving trips for the Amish community.
His hobbies include hunting, fishing, sight-seeing and traveling around North America. He also enjoyed a good card game with his family, watching his four daughters and grandchildren grow throughout the years. Richard was an avid woodworker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene, Charles and James Gardner.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary G. Clapsadle Gardner, four daughters, Tammy (Tom) Gardner-Delsavio of Portland, OR; Tina (Kirk) Gray, Lynne Alwine all of Newburg and Leann Jonas, Mayfield Heights, OH, three sisters, Lavina Coleman, Mary Ann Robertson and Virginia Peters, two brothers, Robert and Lee Gardner, nine grandchildren, Mary, Jacob and Anna Delsavio, Chancellor, Agusta and Gardner Gray, Taylor and (husband Tyler) Fairchild and Eleanor and Max Jonas; and his first great granddaughter, Collette Fairchild. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 30, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in the Newburg United Methodist Church, Newburg, with the Rev. Steve P. Salisbury officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service in the church.
