Richard Davis Virgens

December 9, 1932 — August 18, 2017

Richard Davis Linscott Virgens
Richard Davis Linscott Virgens, 84, passed away Friday, August 18, 2017 at Claremont Nursing Home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Richard was born December 9, 1932 in Lewiston, Maine to Hazel Emogene Prout and John Shepard Linscott of North Monmouth, Maine. Emil Paul Walter Virgens, who remained his father throughout life, later adopted Richard. Richard attended various schools throughout his childhood and graduated from Hyattsville High School, Class of 1950, Hyattsville, Maryland.
He attended Strayer’s College, the University of Maryland, and he completed accounting and economics courses at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
After college, Richard served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He served in Germany, which provided him with the opportunity to visit his father’s hometown and many of the capital cities of Europe. After military service, Richard worked for the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C. and helped with the re-election of Dwight David Eisenhower. He married Patricia Belle Marshall, daughter of Ira and Isabel Marshall, on June 9, 1956 at St. John’s Baptist, De La Salle in Chillum, MD.
From 1956 to 1988, Richard worked in the insurance industry. He worked in Policyholder Services for Equitable Life Insurance Company of D.C. and Valley Forge Life Insurance Company of Reading, PA. He moved into insurance administration at Penn Pacific Corporation, Harrisburg, PA (Administrative Vice President), at Teachers Protective Mutual Life Insurance Company, Lancaster, PA (Secretary), and at Consumers Financial Corporation, Camp Hill, PA (Secretary, Administrative Vice President). He also served on the Corporate Board of Directors for American Consumers Life Insurance Company, Consumers Reinsurance Company, Cosmopolitan Investors Life Insurance Company, Interstate Auto Auction Incorporated, and Pittsburgh Life Insurance Company. In 1989, he accepted a position with the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Raleigh, NC, where he served as Examiner-In-Charge of the Life Market Conduct Examination Team until his retirement in 1994.
His happiest times were spent with his family and traveling throughout the United States in his motor home. He liked to travel with his grandchildren and offer them multigenerational opportunities to learn about the geography, history, and culture of the United States. When he retired the motor home, he donated the motor home to the “Read and Feed” program for elementary students in Raleigh, NC. He also enjoyed attending high school, AAU, and college basketball games when his daughters and grandchildren were members of the team or team coaches. He was a particularly vocal cheerleader for “his girls.”
Richard is survived by his wife, Patricia Belle Marshall Virgens; daughters Linda Anundson (Ron) and Shelly Perry (Wayne); and grandchildren Rachel Perry, and her companion, Ben Eichhorst, Kaitlin Perry, and her companion, Jeremy Hartman, Abigail Anundson, and Katherine Anundson.
