Rev. Doyle Bishop Rogers, 88, of Carlisle, departed this life on the morning of Friday, April 28, 2023, at his home.
He was born on June 20, 1934, in Coalwood, McDowell County, West Virginia, a son of the late Everett J. and Thelma V. (Bishop) Rogers. Doyle eloped with Bertha Mae Jackson on July 27, 1952 in Gaffney, SC. She preceded him in death on July 20, 2016 and was laid to rest on the day of their 64th Wedding Anniversary.
Doyle worked many occupations throughout his life, but was first and foremost a minister, starting when he was just 16 years old. While ministering he also worked in construction; as a painter; a custodian; a school bus driver; a “honey dipper”; a bridge crane operator at Bethlehem Steel; at Dexter Shoe, at Corina Woolen Mill; and several others over the years. Doyle was the longtime Pastor of the Faith Chapel Church of God, Shippensburg, and also served as Pastor of Owings Mills Church of God, Owings Mills, MD; White Hall Church of God, White Hall, MD; and West Levant Church of God, Stetson, ME.
He was a man of many trades and talents, very artistic and mechanically inclined. After his retirement in 2017 he continued to study the Bible and share his finding on the internet. In his free time he enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, wire and chalk art, and trains. Doyle could fix just about anything. He liked to travel with his family and go on rides in the mountains around the area. He looked forward to eating breakfast out every Wednesday and lunch on Sunday afternoon after church with friends and family. Doyle was a member of the Big Spring Heights Church of God, Newville.
Beloved father of nine children, Doyle is survived by two daughters, E. Ruth Provins and husband Thomas of Newville and Deonna C. Price and husband Roger of Loysville; six sons, Kenneth D Rogers, and wife Lynn of Baltimore, MD, James J. Rogers, of Lutherville, MD, Jonathan D. Rogers, Sr., and wife Patricia of Shippensburg, Frederick L. Rogers, and wife Winna of Joppatown, MD, Rev. Daniel R. Rogers of Dundalk, MD, and Samuel D. Rogers and wife Nancy of Carlisle; twenty-four grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Margaret Rogers of Dublin, VA and Harriet Rogers of Roanoke, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doyle was of the opinion that, in marrying Bertha, he did not simply become another “son in law”. Rather, he became just another member of the Jackson family. A status which he was very vocal about, expressing his thankfulness and gratitude many times, for being included in, and receiving the love which seemed ever present and freely given to him by everyone there. Of the 16 children in the Jackson family Doyle is survived by Dorothy Bass of VA, Lynn Cartwright of NM, Carol Stanley of OH, and Jerry Jackson of OH.
In addition to his parents and spouse, Doyle was preceded in death by a son, Joseph F. Rogers; a grandson, James J. Rogers II, and three brothers, Lawrence, Joseph and Douglas Rogers.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, May 5, 2023 at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. Shippensburg. Pastor Chris Faylor will officiate. Interment will follow in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg. Viewing will be Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
