Raymond Irvin Pugh, 94, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the evening of Sunday, September 19, 2021, at the Orrstown Personal Care Center.
He was born on December 24, 1926, in Pleasant Hall, a son of the late Andrew M. and Orpha J. (Cramer) Pugh. Raymond was a 1944 graduate of Chambersburg High School and then went on to attend Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, IL. He was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and served in the Philippines. Raymond married Esther June Diehl on May 11, 1949. She preceded him in death on September 9, 2014, after sixty-five years of marriage.
Raymond worked at the Letterkenny Army Depot for several years before he became a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office, where he worked for twenty-eight years before retiring. Raymond was also an executive distributor for W.T. Rawleigh for over fifty years.
He was a longtime member of the Orrstown United Brethren Church, where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, served on many church boards, and was active in hospital and home visitation for many years. Raymond was also on the Orrstown Bank’s Board of Directors for twenty-one years; was a life member of both the Durff-Kuhn V.F.W. Post #6168 and the Pleasant Hall Volunteer Fire Company; and was a member of the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, the Rural Mail Carriers Association, and the former Orrstown Lions Club. In his free time, Raymond enjoyed camping, traveling, geneology history, and golfing.
He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl A. Runshaw and husband John of Shippensburg; two sons, Ray A. Pugh and wife Suzanne of Shippensburg and William D. Pugh and wife Denise of Fayetteville; ten grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Gladys Horst, Dorothy Zullinger, and Shirley Diehl, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Raymond was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastor John Runshaw will officiate, with Mr. Harold Taylor assisting. Interment with military honors will follow in the Pleasant Hall Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and one hour prior to the service on Saturday afternoon at the funeral home. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the use of masks and social distancing is strongly suggested for those in attendance.
Raymond’s family would especially like to thank Elaine, Carly, and the staff of Orrstown Personal Care Home for their love and wonderful care.
