Raymond Miller

October 12, 1924 — April 16, 2015

R. Max Miller, age 90, resident of the Episcopal Home in Shippensburg, passed away on April 16, 2015 in Chambersburg.

Born October 12, 1924 in Meadville, PA, he was the son of the late John R. and Mabel Karn Miller. Max graduated from Berea High School in Berea, Ohio and was in the U.S. Navy from 1942 – 1945. He served as an Air Traffic Controller at the Shelton, Washington Naval Air Station. He married Kathryn Ross on August 5, 1944 in Seattle, Washington.

Max worked at KY Bearings Service for 20 years, beginning as a shipping clerk and ending as Treasurer and Office Manager. His favorite job was the eleven years he was Resident Manger of Camp Loucon, the United Methodist Church Camp in Anneta, KY. He loved God’s creation, could fix most anything, and taught camp staff every summer.

From the time he was eight, he was a Boy Scout. Max was a troop leader, district representative, Order of the Arrow instructor, and recipient of the President’s Award and Silver Beaver Award. He led many camping and hiking adventures, including a two week canoe trip through the lakes of Ontario.

One of the great passions in his later years was family genealogy. He loved the research and connections he made. He was a great storyteller of unending stories.

He is survived by Kathryn “Kit” Miller, his wife of 70 ½ years; five children: Ruth Ward of Shippensburg, John (Debby) Miller of Louisville, KY, Nina (Bruce) Willingham of Bradenton, FL, R. Max Miller, Jr., of Beallsville, PA, and Elnora (Michael) Hubbard of Bowling Green, KY; thirteen grandchildren; and twenty-two great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by his sister, Lennai Edwards.

The service celebrating his life is at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, May 4, 2015, at the Messiah United Methodist Church, at 30 South Penn Street Shippensburg, PA 17257. His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
