Ralph L. Oyler, 91, of Shippensburg, died on Monday, February 18, 2013, at the Chambersburg Hospital.
He was born on August 23, 1921, in Fayetteville, a son of the late H. Lester and Edna Walker Oyler. Ralph was a 1939 graduate of Chambersburg High School. On September 10, 1942, Ralph and his brother Glenn, enlisted in the 8th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Corps, serving together for 27 months in England as Airplane Mechanics. He was honorably discharged on October 31, 1945.
Upon his discharge, Ralph enrolled at the Pennsylvania State University and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He was a self-employed businessman, owning and operating his own Implement and Farm Equipment Store. However, being born and raised on a farm, he tired of working in the industry, and eventually purchased a farm in Shippensburg which he operated until he retired.
Ralph was a member of the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Fayetteville. He was a member of the George Washington Royal Arch Chapter #176, F. & A.M., Chambersburg; a member of the Am. Vets, American Legion, V.F.W., and Moose Lodge. He was a former Cumberland County 4-H leader for 15 years, a former member of the PA Farmers Association, and also a former Township Auditor for Southampton Twp., Cumberland County.
He is survived by two sons, Kevin L. (Teresa) Oyler of Frederick, MD and Dean O. (Nancy) Oyler of Virginia Beach, VA; three grandchildren, Neal R., Dustin R., and Logan E. Oyler; three step-children; and four step-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Etter Oyler who died in 1982; his second wife, Margaret “Peggy” Lawrence Oyler who died in 1999; a son, Ryan R. Oyler who died in 1953; and his brother, Glenn W. Oyler who died in 2012.
His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Fayetteville. The Rev. Eloise M. Shanley will officiate. Interment will follow in the Norland Cemetery. Viewing will be Saturday morning from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County 4-H at 181 Franklin Farm Lane Chambersburg, PA 17202.
