Ralph Haines

July 30, 1926 — January 1, 2017

Ralph Gilbert Haines, 90, a resident of Green Ridge Village, Newville, formerly of Shippensburg, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 1, 2017.

Born on July 30, 1926, in Newport, he was a son of the late Lewis Samuel and Dollie Irene Murphy Haines. Ralph was a 1945 graduate of Newport Senior High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II, inducted on January 31, 1945 and honorably discharged on December 1, 1946 and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, and World War II Victory Medal. He married Vera Mae Woods on August 14, 1948. She preceded him in death on June 4, 2014, after 65 years of marriage.

Ralph was employed at the former United Telephone Co., Chambersburg, for 35 years, retiring in 1988, as a Field Engineer. He was a member of the Shippensburg First Church of God, their Upper Room Sunday School Class, served for many years as a Trustee, and sang in both the Adult and Young At Heart Choirs. Ralph was a member of Shippensburg’s A.A.R.P. #2525 and in his free time enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and was always known as the family’s photographer.

He is survived by two sons, Darwin G. (Nancy) Haines of Newport and Ivan E. (Christine) Haines of Strasburg; his daughter, Carol D. (Lindsey) Schue of Shippensburg; grandson, Devin R. Haines; four granddaughters, Amanda Haines (Nathan) Beamer, Seneca N. Schue, Kierstin R. Haines, and Sierra N. Schue; five brothers, Carl, Ray, Lenus, Donald, and Grover; two sisters, Mildred and Vera; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley, Harry, and Marlin, and one sister, Faye.

His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Shippensburg First Church of God. Pastors Jim Rogers, William E. Myers and Gary Hornbaker will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., on Saturday morning at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shippensburg First Church of God at 121 East King St. Shippensburg, PA 17257.
