Michael B. Swartz, Sr., 69, of Shippensburg, died in the late evening hours of Sunday, October 11, 2015, at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
He was born on February 8, 1946, in Chambersburg, a son of the late Max and Ottie McManus Swartz. Mike was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam war, enlisting on January 15, 1964 and honorably discharged on January 15, 1968, attaining the rank of Corporal. He married Clemence C. Martin on January 28, 1995, at the Mt. Holly Springs Church of God.
Mike was employed at Carlisle Syntec for 35 years, retiring as a supervisor in 2005. He was a member of the Durff-Kuhn V.F.W. Post #6168 and Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, both of Shippensburg. Mike liked to ride motorcycles, hunt and fish, and travel to Canada with his wife. He did a little bit of construction on the side, building porches and roofs, and even with his failing health, still liked to mow his own grass.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Clemence “Clem” Swartz of Shippensburg; four sons, Ryan Swartz of Walnut Bottom, Steve (Natasha) Swartz of Walnut Bottom, Darren Fahnestock of Shippensburg, and Paul Fahnestock of Shippensburg; one daughter, Jodi Fenicle of Walnut Bottom; eight grandchildren; one great granddaughter; two sisters, Sharon Swartz and Wendy Johnson; and seven brothers, Max Swartz, Jr., Sam Swartz, John Swartz, Tim Swartz, Jeff Swartz, Doug Swartz, and Bill Swartz; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by one son, Michael B. Swartz, Jr.
His graveside funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, October 17, 2015, at the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. The Rev. Christopher Failor will officiate. The Shippensburg Area Veterans Council will provide military honors.
