Melvin D. Powell 62, of Needmore, died Tuesday, December 21, 2010 from the result of a logging accident.
Born October 20, 1948 in Cumberland, Maryland, he was a son of the late Henry M. and Catherine Brown Powell.
He was a member of the Newburg First Church of God. Melvin retired from the Letterkenny Army Depot and was working part-time for M & C Lumber Company in Needmore. He was a member of the McConnellsburg American Legion, NARFE, and attended Southern Fulton High School. Melvin was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was a sharp shooter and received the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy L. Hockenberry Powell, one son, Matthew D. Powell of Needmore, two daughters; Kimberly A. Shaffer and her husband Jeffrey of Harrisonville, and Michelle R. Roxby and her husband Scott of Waynesboro, three grandchildren; Logan, Lauren, and Zachary McCusker all of Waynesboro, three step grandchildren; Danielle, Tyler and Abby, Roxby all of Waynesboro, one brother, Henry K. “Buddy” Powell of Stephenson, VA, four sisters; Jackie Booth of Front Royal, VA, Verleen Liner and Joyce Fritz both of Hancock, MD, and Billie Charlene Bell of Dale City, VA, a longtime friend and neighbor, Herman Hann of Needmore, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 29, 2010 in the Newburg First Church of God at 11 a.m. Officiating will be The Rev. Dale H. Miller, Jr. Burial with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg American Legion and VFW Posts will be in the Otterbein Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5-8 p.m. in the church and one hour prior to the services Wednesday morning.
