Mary Showvaker

Mary Elizabeth Showvaker, 86, of Shippensburg, died on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born on July 27, 1925 in Shippensburg, a daughter of the late William Norman and Anna Martha Hammond Miller. She was a 1942 graduate of Shippensburg Area High School and also graduated from the former Carlisle Commercial College in 1943.

On August 30, 1947, Mary married Mr. Richard E. “Dick” Showvaker in the Shippensburg First Church of God. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1981.

Prior to marriage, Mary worked for the former H. J. Heinz Co., the M & M Restaurant, Hoffman Mills, and was a Recorder of Deeds at the Cumberland County Courthouse. After her marriage to Mr. Showvaker, Mary became a wonderfully devoted wife and mother.

Mary was a member of the Shippensburg First Church of God and its Berean Sunday School Class, a former Shippensburg Area Election Volunteer, and during World War II, was a Civil Defense “Night Guard”. Her favorite television programs were “Little House on the Prairie” and “All in the Family” and she also liked to watch Billy Graham and Joel Osteen. She was a very good artist and had won several art contests with her work. She loved music and was an excellent gardener.

She is survived by two daughters; Elizabeth A. (Charles L. Jr.) Shover of Carlisle and Joyce C. Showvaker of Shippensburg; three sisters, Rachel O’Donnell and Dorothy Daniels, both of Menno Haven and Vivian J. Peters of Shippensburg; three grandchildren, Bradley C. (Melissa) Shover of Enola, Christopher R. (Jamie) Shover of Oxford, and Amy E. (Joel) Breban of Harrisburg; four great-grandchildren, Bailey and Jackson Shover and Julien and Zooey Breban; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Miller.

Her funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. The Rev. Paul K. Hauk will officiate. Interment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Tuesday, at the funeral home.
