Mary Shearer

January 14, 1919 — August 4, 2013

Mary Leo Shearer, 94, formerly of Hershey, Shippensburg and Mt. Holly Springs, died Aug. 4, 2013, at Green Ridge Village senior living community in Newville.

Born in Halifax Jan. 14, 1919, daughter of Concetta (Magnelli) and Leonard Samuel Leo, she was the widow of John O. Shearer, first president and business manager of Local 464 of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers Union of Hershey.

After her husband’s death, Mary ran his businesses, Lone Trail Kennels and Jo Mar Trailer Court, in the Palmdale neighborhood of Hershey; and had a diverse career. She was office manager for the Acme Juicerator Co. in Lemoyne; taught bowling at Leisure Lanes, Hershey; managed Ambrosia health food restaurant and juice bar at the corner of Second and State streets, Harrisburg; sold produce with her sister, Peggy McCann of Harrisburg, at Sunnyhill Farms Dairy in Lower Paxton Township; and sold used books at flea markets and her home in Mt. Holly Springs.

A creative person, she enjoyed auctions, antiques, cooking, needlework, poker, reading, the ocean, dogs and cats, and the music of Johnny Mathis. Time spent with family and good friends was her greatest joy.

She was a Protestant, most recently a member of Middle Spring Presbyterian Church of Shippensburg.

In addition to her sister, she is survived by a daughter, Marijon Shearer of Shippensburg; a grandson, Jack Godleski of Northampton, Massachusetts; a sister-in-law; and a large number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents and husband, by two sisters and six brothers.

A gathering to celebrate her life will take place later in the year, at a date to be announced. Burial in Hershey Cemetery will be private. Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg, has been entrusted with her funeral arrangements.
