Kay Michael Howland 92
Mary Kathryn Michael Howland of Shippensburg, PA, passed away, peacefully, Thursday, April 21, 2011, in Manor Care, Chambersburg PA, where she called home since January 2010.
Born in Shippensburg PA, October 31, 1918, Kay was a daughter of the late Daniel Ernest and Mary Jane Shaeffer Michael. She graduated from Shippensburg High School in 1937, and lived and worked in Shippensburg nearly her entire life. She was a secretary at the former ShirtCraft and private secretary at the former L'aiglon on Lurgan Avenue, and later in life was employed at Henry's Pharmacy on East King Street. She was very active in her church, Prince Street UB Church, having served as secretary of the Sunday school, life member of the Women's Missionary Association and treasurer, and president of Christian Endeavor. She also was a charter member of the AARP 2525, and a member of the Lions Club in Shippensburg.
Kay was married in 1991 to Erwin W. Howland. Her beloved husband passed away January 27, 1999. They enjoyed many wonderful travels together. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lester P Michael (Grace A Michael) of Bristol PA, a sister, Hazel Michael Miller (Richard B Miller), an infant brother, Gordon Michael, and a step daughter, Amelia Howland of Shippensburg.
She is survived by her step children, E. Walter Howland (Elizabeth), Jean H. Robinson (William), Master Sgt. Richard Howland (Penny) of Shippensburg, Cecelia H.Schriner (David) of Hampton VA, Diana H.Kalb (Michael) of Houston TX, Evelyn H. Vogelsong (Steven) of Carlisle PA, and Major George Howland (Sonja) of Enterprise AL She is also survived by her step grandchildren, Rebecca Howland, James Robinson, Craig Robinson (Becca), Scott Schriner (Amy), Steven Schriner (Natalie), Christopher Schriner, Tania Kalb, Michael Kalb, Chad Vogelsong (Aleah), Derek Vogelsong, Jennifer H Love (Ryan), Jaime Howland, Travis Howland, and Ashley Howland. Step great grandchildren are Brianna Schriner, Ella Schriner, and Ryleigh Love.
Affectionately called Aunt Bugs by her nieces and nephews, she was a sweet aunt and gentle lady who will be missed by her family. Surviving family are Kay Miller Bell (Edward) and Richard B Miller (Eileen) of Chambersburg, and Robert G. Michael (Emily), of Myrtle Beach SC. Her great nieces and nephews are Meghan Michael (Terry Hicks), Angela B Wilson (Mark), Edward Bell III (Kelly), Richard Bell (Susan), Thomas Bell, Kristen Miller (David Boardman), and Carrie M Newcomer (Adam Newcomer). Great-great nieces and nephews are Megan Bell, Lauren Bell, Max Bell, Amanda Bell, Alexandra Wilson, Carly Wilson, Julia Boardman, Emily Boardman, Kate Newcomer, Selena Hicks, and baby boy Newcomer, expected in August 2011.
A memorial service will be Sunday, May 1, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the Prince Street United Brethren Church, with Pastor James O. Bolich officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends at the church one hour prior to the services. Burial will be private.
