Martin J. “Sonny” Bigler, Jr., 80, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Monday, July 1, 2024, at his home.
He was born on September 14, 1943, in Shippensburg, a son of the late Martin J. and Josephine (Hockenberry) Bigler, Sr. Sonny married Judy Eyer on May 16, 1963, in the Orrstown United Brethren Church. She preceded him in death on October 17, 2020.
Sonny worked as a custodian at Shippensburg University for seventeen years, retiring in 2006. He really took great pride in his work and enjoyed his time at the University. Sonny also worked for the former Domestic Pump Co., Shippensburg, as well.
He was a social member of the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223 and Durff-Kuhn V.F.W. Post #223, both of Shippensburg. Sonny was a longtime member of the Vigilant Hose Co. #1, Shippensburg, serving with their Fire Police, and was also a Cumberland County Deputy Sherriff. He enjoyed simply being outdoors, hunting and fishing in his younger years, and camping with his late wife Judy. Sonny was a big fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, and Penn State. He also enjoyed going to casinos.
He is survived by his son, Troy L. Bigler of Shippensburg; grandson, Mitchel V. Knipp of Harrisonville; great grandchildren, Madison Eater and Bently Dishong of McConnellsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and spouse, Sonny was preceded in death by a sister, Julia Martin; and two siblings in infancy, George and Beulah.
His funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., on Monday, July 8, 2024, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastor James Martin will officiate. Interment will follow in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be Sunday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
