Marie L. Baughman, 88, a resident of the Quarters at Shook Home, Chambersburg, formerly of Musser Road, Shippensburg, died Monday, January 7, 2013 in the Chambersburg Hospital as a result of injuries from a fall.
She was born February 13, 1924 in Shippensburg, PA. Marie was a daughter of the late John E. and Grace E. Burkhart Booz. She was a 1941 graduate of the Shippensburg High School.
Marie was a lifelong member of the Ridge Church of the Brethren. She served in numerous leadership positions including deacon, the first female chairperson of the Church Board, and was a Sunday School teacher for more than fifty years. She was a member of the church quilting group which created quilts for disaster relief organizations.
In the Church of the Brethren Southern Pennsylvania District, she served on the District Board in several leadership capacities and on the Women’s Auxiliary for Cross Keys Brethren Home.
In the early 1980’s she served as state president of the Pennsylvania Society of Farm Women. Previously she was a Charter member and first president of the Franklin County Group #7. Marie and her late husband operated a dairy farm for 18 years in Greene Township.
She was active in numerous community activities including the Franklin County Bicentennial Pageant, Board of Assistance, and Democratic Women’s Club. In 1990 she was recognized as the Greene Township Lions Club Citizen of the Year.
She was known for her characterization of “Matilda” and presented monologues throughout the area as entertainment for community programs.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, D. Merle Baughman who died September 21, 1986. A brother, Donald Booz and a sister, Helen Finkenbinder are also deceased.
She is survived by three sons, Harold M. Baughman and his wife Donna of Lancaster, Carl L. Baughman and his wife Karen of Butler, and Allan D. Baughman and his wife Gilda of Chambersburg, one daughter, Lois M. Clark and her husband Michael of Columbia, MD, eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, one sister, Ruth L. Crouse of Newville, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 12, 2013 in the Ridge Church of the Brethren at 10:30 a.m. Officiating will be The Rev. Earl F. Stovall and The Rev. Harold E. Yeager. Burial will be in the Ridge Cemetery. A viewing will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg and one hour prior to the services Saturday morning at church.
