Margaret Ann ‘Peggy” Coffman, 84, formerly of Shippensburg, late of Menno Haven, departed this life on the evening of February 11, 2022.
She was born on July 21, 1937, in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late Purdy and Doris (Wehrman) Halstead, Jr. Peggy was a 1958 graduate of Syracuse University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Communications. She married Richard Allen Coffman on June 2, 1962, in Washington, DC.
While the Coffmans lived in Washington DC, Peggy worked at the Library of Congress as an exchange accessioner. Upon moving to Shippensburg, she worked part-time for the Shippensburg Area School District as an English language tutor.
Peggy was involved in many community activities throughout her life, including the Shippensburg Civic Club, the Shippensburg Historical Society, the annual March to Destiny Civil War observance, and the Shippensburg University Faculty Wives Club. She also enjoyed participating in ballroom dancing with her husband.
In addition to her husband of fifty-nine years, she is survived by her son, Richard A. Coffman, Jr., and wife Barbara of Phoenixville, PA; her daughter, Doris E. Hutley and husband James of Camp Hill, PA; two grandchildren, David M. Coffman of Bethlehem, PA, and Sarah J. Coffman of Phoenixville; her brother, Purdy A. Halstead of Olivebridge, NY; one niece and one nephew.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents.
Her public memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at the Shippensburg Church of the Brethren. Pastor Jonathan Bream will officiate. Visitation will be concurrent with a luncheon held in the church Family Life Center, following her memorial service. Peggy was laid to rest in the Spring Hill Cemetery, during a private committal service, on February 18, 2022.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions be made to the Shippensburg Church of the Brethren at 253 East Garfield Street, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
