Lucille B. Sappington, 83, of Shippensburg, passed away Sunday, August 13, 2017 in the Chambersburg Hospital.
She was born September 8, 1933 in Baltimore, MD. Lucille was the daughter of the late Ulric and Della Parker Brock.
Devoted wife, loving mother, adoring grandmother, Lucille lived her life as an expression of her deep faith, reaching out to those in need in times of hardship. After retiring from her secretarial career, Lucille devoted countless hours baking and crocheting for her church; playing piano and hand bells to lift others’ spirits; cooking meals and collecting clothes for the homeless; and teaching adult Sunday school students in Chambersburg.
Lucille’s love for her children and grandchildren—and for animals of any type, shape and size—had no bounds. Her children could count on Lucille to allow snakes, fish, mice, ducks, raccoons, German shepherds, Siberian huskies—and even an octopus—into their home. Stray cats, in great numbers, came calling at her door. Her love of the natural world helped inspire her four grandchildren and all those who knew her to admire God’s creatures as well.
In her early career, Lucille served as the personal secretary to the commander of the Second Army of Engineers at Fort Meade military base. She then became a school secretary at Pasadena Elementary School, retiring after 13 years. She also employed her vast secretarial skills as a volunteer with the Pasadena Assembly of God Church.
A 1951 graduate of Glen Burnie High School, Lucille went on to graduate from the Bard Avon Secretarial School in Baltimore. She settled in Pasadena, Maryland, with her husband, William, to raise their children. She was active in the Salvation Army of Glen Burnie. After moving to Chambersburg, Lucille became an active member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Chambersburg.
Among her hobbies, Lucille enjoyed playing piano, sewing, knitting, gardening, scrapbooking and taking care of her many cats.
Lucille is survived by her husband, William J. Sappington, Sr., three children, William J. Sappington, Jr. of West Chester, PA; Lawrence B. (Alyson) Sappington of Barboursville, VA and Keith G. (Elizabeth) Sappington of Riva, MD, and four grandchildren, Ryan, Kelby, Anna and James.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Ulric Gordon Brock of Florida.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 19, 2017 in the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Chambersburg at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Pastor Rachel Keller Wong. There will be no visitation prior to the services at church, however a luncheon will follow.
