Lt. Colonel Harland E. Carney, Jr., 83, died on July 9, 2010 at his home, surrounded by family.

Born on June 21, 1927 in Pontiac, MI a son of the late Harland E. and Ruth Sample Carney, Sr.

Harland served in the U.S. Maritime Service, Middle East, East, and South Africa. During his career in the U.S. Army, he served in the U.S., Europe, India, Japan, and Korea. Later in life, he worked as a real estate broker and appraiser. Besides writing his own autobiography, he enjoyed rollerblading, classical and blues music, and dancing. He stayed apprise of the stock market, religions of the world, new health programs, and educating himself on various types of other new learning. He is a life member of the Charles M. Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599, Chambersburg. He enjoyed traveling, attending broadway shows, and playing golf with his loving wife, Arlene. They were married on November 20, 2000 in Oahu, Hawaii.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene, his children; Susan Carney, Daniel (Paula) Carney, Harland (Gabriela) Carney, Joshua (Holly) Carney, Nathaniel (Mika) Carney, and Jochen Paltur, his step-children; Bonnie (Richard) Miller, Stephen (Brenda) Ott, Tracy (Wayde) Hockenberry, Anthony (Lisa) Ott, and Jami (Larry Crabtree) Werdebaugh. He was blessed with eleven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, one great grandchild, and also survived by one sister Patricia (Robert) Richardson and one brother, Max (Esther) Carney.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara, a son, Jurgen, one brother, Robert, and two sisters, Norma and Hilda.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. The Rev. Terri Zastovnik will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Wednesday, at the funeral home.
