Lewis D. “Lewie” Swartz, 90, of Newburg, died on the morning of Wednesday, October 23, 2013.
He was born on July 20, 1923, in Hopewell Twp., a son of the late Samuel and Mary Thrush Swartz. On May 27, 1944, Lewis married Vera Brenize in Hagerstown, MD. She preceded him in death on July 14, 2012.
Lewis was a self-employed Dairy and Beef Farmer and was also a Hopewell Township Supervisor for thirty years. He had also worked on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and at the Letterkenny Army Depot in the past.
He was a member of the Newburg First Church of God and along with the Otterbein United Methodist Church, he served at both; as a deacon, a trustee, was a member of many church committees, and served on various boards. Lewis was a Charter Member of the Newburg-Hopewell Volunteer Fire Company, a member of the Newburg Community Men’s Chorus, a life member of the Shippensburg Fish and Game Association, and also a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge # 562, Newburg.
Lewis is survived by his son, Robert L. (Elsie) Swartz; two daughters, Shirley J. (Eugene) Mellinger and Cathy L. (Duane) Gipe; seven grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Lewis was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Newburg First Church of God. The Rev. Dale H. Miller, Jr., will officiate. Interment will follow in the Otterbein Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at church.
