Lewis Sailhamer

Lewis W. “Louie” Sailhamer, 93, life-long resident of Shippensburg, died on the morning of Thursday, January 29, 2015, at the Chambersburg Hospital.

He was born on January 26, 1922, in Shippensburg, a son of the late Willis J. and Ellen E. Nye Sailhamer. Lewis was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of W.W. II, inducted on November 25, 1942 and honorably discharged on February 23, 1946, having been an Engineer on a C-46 Troop Carrier in the European Theatre. Upon his return, he married Ms. Virginia A. Goshorn from Spring Run, on June 26, 1948, at the Church of God, Hagerstown, MD.

Lewis was employed at the former Shirtcraft and L’Aiglon garment factories, Orrstown Bank, and Shippensburg University, retiring from the University in 1984.

He was a member of the Shippensburg First Church of God for 74 years, having taught Sunday School, in the youth department, for a number of years; serving on the Church Council; and was always very active in Church activities. He was also a member of the Shippensburg A.A.R.P #2525.

Lewis is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia; two loving sons, Ronald L. Sailhamer and wife Janet and Willis C. Sailhamer and wife Candy; one granddaughter, Rhonda Lea Sailhamer Dyson and husband John; one grandson, Brent A. Sailhamer and wife Leah; three great grandchildren, Kemper Dyson, Joey Dyson, and Emma Dyson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Elizabeth Sailhamer Gantt, and his brother, Jesse Sailhamer. Lewis was the last of his immediate family.

His funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastors’ James Rodger, Marc Nelson, and William Myers will officiate. Interment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
