Lewis K. “Sonny” Mitten, 88, ended his life’s labor and went to be with the Master Carpenter, on the morning of Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on November 22, 1924, at their farmhouse in Leesburg, a son of the late Walters and Margaret Cressler Mitten. Sonny was raised in Shippensburg and was a U.S. Navy veteran of W.W. II.
Sonny worked as a skilled commercial carpenter and superintendant, as a member of the Carpenters Local Union #214. After retirement, he shared his skills working on missionary projects around the world.
He was a member of the Shippensburg Church of the Nazarene and served numerous positions of responsibility there. He was also a member of the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion, Post #223 and the Durff-Kuhn V.F.W. Post #6168, both of Shippensburg. Sonny enjoyed hunting, fishing, tending to his horses, singing, and watching his family grow.
Sonny is survived by his wife, Dolora L. Scott Mitten; three sons, Ted, Brian, and Larry; two daughters, Darla and Sherre; sister, Verna “Bonnie” Vaughn; thirteen grandchildren; and twenty-six great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Robert Mitten.
His funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Shippensburg Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Todd Risser will officiate. Interment with military honors, conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday evening, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday, at the church.
