Dr. Kermit M. Laidig, 92, a resident of Green Ridge Village, Newville, and formerly of Newburg, died Thursday, March 6, 2014 in Green Ridge Village.
Born January 11, 1922 in Mowersville, he was the son of the late Brinton D. and Velma Alloway Laidig.
Dr. Laidig was a retired Professor of Geography-Earth Science at Shippensburg University. During his life he taught at various other institutions including, University of Nebraska, University of Oklahoma, and Illinois State University.
He received his B.S. degree from Shippensburg University in 1943, his M.A. degree and Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska.
Following his graduation from Shippensburg University, he worked for the Eastman Kodak Company.
He was a United States Army Veteran of World War 2, having served in the 34th Infantry Division. He saw action in North Africa and Italy and was involved with accepting the surrender of the German 75th Corp. May 2, 1945.
After World War 2, while earning his Doctorate he worked with the land utilization program in Puerto Rico as well as field mapping of the entire island. He also assisted the United Nations in its founding years to establish teaching programs. He was an executive member of the National Council for Geographic Education and had published numerous writings in journals and books.
In addition to being an educator, he was an active farmer and belonged to the Pennsylvania Farmers Association, where he served on many committees. He traveled extensively throughout Latin American and Europe. He was a member of Middle Spring Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Avis Jean Held Laidig. They were married in Nebraska June 5, 1948. Also surviving are one son, Reginald B. Laidig and his partner Dennis Cramer, of Newburg and one granddaughter, Elizabeth A. Laidig of Twin Falls, Idaho. He was preceded in death by one son, Dr. Bruce E. Laidig and one sister, Dorothy L. Reddig.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM, Monday, March 10, 2014 at Middle Spring Presbyterian Church. The Rev. James Richwine will officiate. Burial will be in Middle Spring Cemetery. A visitation will follow the service in the church social hall.
