Kenneth G. “Ken” Varner, 78, of Newville, passed away the afternoon of Saturday, June 29, 2024 at UPMC West Shore.
He was born on March 16, 1946 in Walnut Bottom, a son of the late Beattie C. and Almeda Zinn Varner. He married Joan E. Ott on April 1, 1980.
Ken was a United States Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He retired from the former C.H. Masland & Sons, Carlisle after 30 years of employment. Ken loved going to horseraces, was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and enjoyed hunting in his younger years. He also enjoyed watching FoxNews and loved his dog, Louie.
In addition to his wife of 44 years, Joan Varner, he is survived by three children, Tammy (fiancé Kerwood Weaver) Varner of Newville, Craig (Sue) Varner of Carlisle, and Ronnie Varner of Harrisburg; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Virginia) Varner of Shippensburg; sister-in-law, Kathy (Dennis) Jardine of Carlisle; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Tony and Vonnie Varner; one grandson, Jason Varner; eight brothers, Glenn, Richard, Russell, Floyd, Rodney, Lee, Marlin, and Galen Varner; and three sisters, Faye Over, Fredith Querry, and Dorothy Shaffer.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 8, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. with Rev. David A. Erisman officiating. Burial will follow in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted by the Minutemen of the American Legion Post #223. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.
