Kenneth S. Reese, 88, of Newburg, departed this life on the morning of Monday, January 11, 2016, at the Thornwald Home, Carlisle, surrounded by the love of his family and great compassionate care.
He was born on May 13, 1927, in Carlisle Springs, a son of the late R. Smith and Margaret Weary Reese. Ken was the first Eagle Scout in the Mt. Holly Springs Troop #170. He graduated from the Carlisle High School in 1945 and promptly joined the U.S Coast Guard. Upon his honorable discharge on May 4, 1946, he enrolled at Pennsylvania State University, where he was a member of the Blue Band and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Horticulture. Ken spent his early career working in the Greenhouse Industry.
In 1962, Ken went back to school and earned a Master’s Degree from Shippensburg University, graduating in 1965. He then embarked on a career teaching Science at Carlisle, Chambersburg, Beardstown, IL, and also at Penn Tech in Williamsport, PA.
He was a member of the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder, Deacon, and Teacher for many years. A true grower, Ken was always at his best potting the beautiful azaleas that he grew.
Ken is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Webber Reese; his daughter, Christina (Gary) Reese of Mechanicsburg; two sons, John K. (Evelyn) Reese of Carlisle and Dan (Karen) Reese of Mechanicsburg; five grandchildren, Robert J. (Kellie) Reese, Megan (Kristjan) Callahan, Katelyn (J.T.) Hollinger, and Page and Keely Reese; three great granddaughters, Kyla and Scarlett Callahan and Sadie Mae Zilinski; one brother, James Reese of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his sister, Maxine Palmer.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church, Shippensburg. The Rev. Kimberley D. Wadlington will officiate. Interment in the Middle Spring Cemetery will be private. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday morning at the church.
