Kathryn Poe

Kathryn Elizabeth Brenize Poe, 101, of Orrstown, died April 29th, 2017, at Menno Haven, Chambersburg.

Mrs. Poe was born February 28, 1916 in Mowersville, Franklin County, PA. She was a daughter of Zook Samuel Brenize and Clara Elizabeth Heberlig Brenize. She was the wife of the late John Howard Poe, of Orrstown, who died in 1981. They were married June 8, 1938. She lived in Orrstown for more than 70 years before moving to Menno-Village in 1991.

Mrs. Poe is survived by three daughters: Nancy P. Rea of Carlisle, Ava M. Neff and husband Richard of Fairfax, VA, and Karen Poe and husband Fred Hait of Carlisle. Survivors also include eight grandchildren, Timothy Rea of St. Louis, MO; Alex Neff of Bischheim, France; Sarah Neff Wargo of Arlington, VA; Joy Rea of Carlisle; Kathryn A. Poe of Marysville; Jonathan Rea of Atglen; Bethany Hait of Leesburg, VA; Thaddeus Hait of New Cumberland; and their respective spouses. There are also 10 great-grandchildren, Simon, Henry, Oscar, George, and Calvin Neff; Allison and Abigail Rea; Erica and Theo Wargo; and Adam Rwegayura. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was preceded in death by her brother, George Brenize, and her sister, Vesta Brenize Pittman.

She was a 1933 graduate of the Shippensburg Senior High School. She then graduated from Shippensburg State Teachers’ College (now Shippensburg University) in 1937. She was a third grade teacher in the Chambersburg School District and taught for many years at the Lurgan Elementary School.

Mrs. Poe became a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orrstown in 1928. She was very active in the Church and was a primary Sunday School teacher.

She was a member of the First Court Chapter #470 Order of the Eastern Star, Valley Cedarettes of Shippensburg, Golden Age Club of Shippensburg, PA Retired Teachers’ Association, and the American Association of Retired Persons. She served on the Orrstown Bank Advisory Board and with Released Time Bible Classes.

Arrangements are being handled by the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Shippensburg, with a viewing there on Friday evening May 5th from 6-8 p.m. Another viewing will begin an hour prior to the memorial service which will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Orrstown on Saturday, May 6th at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Vicar Aaron Smith of St. Paul, with Pastor Bonnie Hoffman, former pastor at St. Paul assisting and preaching. Interment will follow at the Spring Hill Cemetery.
