John Charles Powell, 66, of Olde Scotland Road, Shippensburg, passed into his Savior’s arms on December 30, 2023, in the Chambersburg Hospital, after a long vigil with loved ones at his side.
John was born on November 22, 1957, in Chambersburg, to parents, Jay H. and Dorothy (Kenyon) Powell. He was the loving husband of Denise (House) Powell, who passed away on April 4, 2023, after twenty-seven years of marriage. This was a loss that John could not endure.
John was a longtime member of the Shippensburg First Church of God. He was a 1976 graduate of Shippensburg Area Senior High School, and after graduating from a meat cutting school in Upper Darby, PA, he returned to Shippensburg and worked in various local supermarkets, including Cressler’s, finally retiring from Nell’s Market in Carlisle, PA.
John was a true outdoorsman. He loved the mountains, and all kinds of hunting and fishing, but his greatest joy was taking long walks in the mountains with his faithful dog, Gus, by his side. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and was very close to his sisters and brother. Together the family enjoyed every holiday and all the summer picnics, which always included card games of poker or blitz.
John was a good son, a good brother, a good uncle, a good husband, and a good friend – he was a good man. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his sisters, Linda Klein of Shippensburg, and Patricia (Paul) McClure of Chambersburg; his brother, Richard Powell of Shippensburg; two nieces, Nancy Morton and Melissa Jones; nephew, Kristopher Powell of Shippensburg; and several great nieces and nephews.
John’s funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastor Matthew Tosten will officiate. Interment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday morning at the funeral home.
