John Mccann

John E. McCann, 80, of Shippensburg, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013 in the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Saturday, November 26, 1932 in Shippensburg, he was a son of the late Albert Edward and Lenna S. Squires McCann.

John was a graduate of the former Shippensburg High School and a 1953 graduate of Shippensburg University. He taught for two years at Central Dauphin High School.

He was employed by People’s National Bank as a teller in 1955, was promoted to Cashier & Trust Officer in 1968 and Executive Vice President in 1970. John was appointed to the Board of Directors in 1977. He was elected President of People’s National Bank in 1979. When People’s National Bank merged with Dauphin Deposit in 1982, he was appointed Senior Vice President. He retired from the bank in 1994.

John was the Organizing President of the Shippensburg Little League in 1958 and was Jaycee’s Young Man of the Year in 1960. John served on the Shippensburg Area School District Board of Directors and was President of the School Board in 1977. He was Past Master of the Cumberland Valley Lodge # 315 F& A.M and served as President of the Shippensburg State College General Alumni Association in 1980 and 1981. John was an Ordained Elder at the Shippensburg Presbyterian Church and attended Middle Spring Presbyterian Church in Shippensburg.

John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Arlene Dubbs McCann; one daughter, Deborah A. (McCann) Lear and her husband James of Clarksburg, WV; one son John A. McCann and his wife Barbara of Waynesboro; four grandchildren, Melissa (Lear) Mann, Matthew Lear, Kathleen McCann and Meghan McCann; four great grandchildren, Jacob, Carter, and Mason Mann and Thomas Lear; five nephews, Rev. Richard, William and Robert Kauffman, Edward and Robert McCann; and one niece, Francis (McCann) Witmer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael E. McCann; four brothers, Albert, Jackson, George and Robert McCann and two sisters; Margaret (McCann) Kauffman and Helen (McCann) Carbaugh.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church, Shippensburg with the Rev Kimberley D. Wadlington and the Rev. James R. Richwine officiating. Burial will be private.
